He was born Oct. 26, 1927, in rural Buffalo, the son of Arthur and Agnes Opal Duncan Kirby. He married Esther M. Patton on June 18, 1945, in Union City, Tenn.
Donald was a member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church and followed the St. Louis Cardinals, along with the Illini basketball team. He was one of the founders of the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department. Donald served on the board of the Boys Farm Foundation for 20 years and was a precinct committeeman for the Republican party for 50 years. He was a member of Carlock Masonic Lodge 904, AF&AM, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Valley of Springfield, and Ansar Shrine. Donald farmed for 40 years and worked for 25 years with the state of Illinois Department of Transportation.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers, James, Eugene and John Kirby.
He is survived by his wife, Esther of Buffalo; daughter, Cynthia Kirby Kiser (companion, Don Pruitt) of Memphis, Tenn.; three sons, Kenneth T. Kirby (Polly) of Riverton, Alan E. Kirby (Jeanne) of Springfield and Donald C. Kirby (Jacqie) of Buffalo; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, William D. Kirby of Tolono and Merle L. Kirby of Greenview; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fullenwider-Park Funeral Home in Mechanicsburg. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dick Piscatelli officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Richard J. McCauley, 88, of Sarasota, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
