John Mansur was born to John Mansur, Jr. (1734 - 1776) and Ruth Varnum Mansur (1743 - 1813) in colonial, Methuen, Massachusetts.

He was a Baptist deacon. He moved to East Andover, New Hampshire, where he built the first saw and grist mill in that town. From there to Belfast, Maine, where he owned a dock with his brother James, and finally to Monroe, Maine.

John was married to Susannah Morrill in Methuen on Dec. 9, 1790 by Rev. Simon F. Williams. They had nine children: Susan (1791), John (1793), Morrill (1795), David (1797), Holton (1799), Moody (1801), Alvah (1802), Rufus (1806) and Reuben Morrill (1811). He died in Monroe in 1835, with Susannah following 20 years later in 1855.
