Another link with the historic past has indeed been severed by the death of John Ballendine, 87, on October 30, 1970. He was the grandson of Peter Ballendine, Hudson's Bay trader who was acknowledged as the first settler in this locality. The Ballendine name is older than Battleford itself and the family has been here since before 1876.
The war services of Ballendine family is unique in the annals of Canada. John served with the 8th Battalion of the Winnipeg Rifles in World War One and gained fame as a sniper in France. He was mentioned in dispatches and written in the war records of Lord Beaverbrook, in World War Two all eight of his sons served in the Canadian Army, five going overseas.
John Ballendine was born in Battleford August 9, 1883 and had lived here all his life. He married the former Marie Ouellette on November 23, 1906 and took his bride to the farm in the Eagle Hills district where they lived until moving to Battleford in 1909.
He was a faithful member of his church and a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Battleford Branch No. 9.
He is survived by his wife eight sons, one daughter, 47 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held November 2 from St. Vital's Catholic Church Battleford. Rev. Fr. R. Jourdain officiating. Interment was in the Soldiers Plot in Battleford Cemetery. Legion Branch 9 conducted the grave side service and Sallows and McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
