Major League Baseball Player. He was a shortstop for three teams in eleven years in the majors. Born Edward Erving Lake, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1939 to 1941), Boston Red Sox (1943 to 1945), and Detroit Tigers (1946 to 1950). In 2,595 plate appearances, he batted a modest .231 with 193 runs batted in. Lake had a knack for drawing walks, with over 100 bases on balls in three consecutive seasons (1945 to 1947). He led the American League shortstops in assists and double plays in 1945. A player with all-around utility value, he pitched in six games for the Red Sox in 1944 and also played some at second and third base.
