We find him in the 1860 census, living in Hampton Falls NH with is parents where his father is working as a farmer. He is listed as a farm laborer. Siblings : Hugh, Margrate, George, Mary A, and Bessy.

US Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles entry for him indicates he enlisted 19 July 1864 as a private in Massachusetts (Company G, Mass 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment) and was mustered out 3 Sept 1865 at Wilmington North Carolina.
