Mary Mixon McCanless, age 95, 160 McCanless Road, Erwin, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at the Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mrs. McCanless was a native of Evergreen, Alabama, and a resident of Washington, D.C., for most of her life before moving to Unicoi County in 1970.
She was a daughter of the late Luke J. and Ethel Kendall Mixon.
Mrs. McCanless retired in 1974 as a registered nurse from George Washington University Hospital after 30 years of service.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Erwin, President of the Paul Sherwood Sunday School Class for many years, and an avid gardener.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. McCanless was preceded in death by her husband, D. Mills McCanless; her brother, Nevin Mixon; and her sister, Ethel Jo Mixon.
She is survived by one cousin, Grace Wooten, Arab, AL; two nieces, Mary Lee Georgia and husband, Roger, Erwin, and Juanita McCanless Trent and husband John, Flag Pond; great nephew, W. Gibson Parker, Greeneville; two great nieces, Mariann Hyde and husband, Steve, Spring Hill, FL, and Mason Trent, Flag Pond; one great-great niece, Lena Kincaid Hyde, Spring Hill, FL.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday October 5, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. from the Old Sanctuary of First Baptist Church with the Reverend Tony Rutherford officiating.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the church.
