Son of John Marshall. Married Cassandra Alfred in 1765 in Macklenburg COunt, VA. They had 6 children; Dennis, Lewis, Susan, Eillenhatt, Benjamin and Nancy.

One of George Washington;s recruiting officer, and is credited with having recruited more men than any other officer that was sent out.
Reported to have been at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown.

Mecklenburg Co. Order Book 4 p 374 13 Oct 1777. Marshall is appointed Captain of the Sixth Cpmpany, 2nd Battalion, Virginia Militia. He is said to have been at Yorktown. Library of Virginia: Court booklet page 5: Revolutionary War service claims, Certificates, Mecklenburg Co. 1, list 13: 300# of beef for Continental Army, 3 pounds sterling, 15 shillings.

Moved from Mecklenburg Co, VA and settled in the Leatherwood Creek section of Henry Co., VA. They spent the remainder of their lives here and are buried on the Wesley Griggs place west of Dyer's store.
From DEED BOOK 6, Page 429-230, Henry County, 23 April 1803. Samuel Marshall, William Toombs and John Wills to Dennis Lark all of Henry County for the sum of One Hundred pounds sells three tracts 1) samuel Marshall conveys 7 acres, 2) William Tooms conveys 89 acres, and John Wills 4 acres.

The will of John Marshall was proved on the oaths of John Arnold, Elisha Arnold as securities for the executor, samuel Marshall. Their bond in the penalty of one thousand pounds was granted for obtaining probate, November 14, 1785.

In the name of God amen. I John Marshall of Mecklenburg County being well and sound and perfect memory thanks to almighty God and calling to remembrance the uncertainty of human life have made this mt last will and testament in manner following. I give committing my soul into the hands of my merciful creator hoping for emissions of my sins through the merits of my blessed redeemer Jesus Christ. My body I leave to be buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named. After my just debts are honestly paid I give unto my son SAMUEL MARSHALL one negroe fellow named Cesar and one negroe boy named Daniel with my bed and furniture aqnd gun with the rest of my household furniture with all I am possessed within the county of Mecklenburg to him and his heirs forever after paying my granddaughter Catheine Carter thirty pounds hard money and my grandson Jesse Carter ten pounds hard money to him and their heirs forever. Item. I give unto my son JAMES MARSHALL one negroe wnech named Daul and all her children and their increase and one negroe fellow named Joe and one negroe boy named Gorge and all the personal estate that I possess him with and money that is owing to me to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give unto my son BENJAMIN MARSHALL one negroe wench named Eady and all her children that I possess with and their increase and all the personal estate that I possessed him with and money that is owing to me to him and his heirs forever. Item. I lend unto Robert Nance and my daughter Ann Nance one negore wench named cate and her child Dick during either of their lives but after their decease, i give them to my daughter Ann Nance's surviving children excepting Judith Nance to them and their heirs forever. Item. I give unto Robert Nance all the personal estate that I possess him with and money he owes me to him and his heirs forever, Item. I give unto my daughter Lucy Malone one iron pott and hook to her and her heirs forever. Item. I give unto my granddaughter Mary Ingram one negro wench named Sarah and all her children and increase to her and her heirs forever. Item. I give unto my granddaughter Betsey Hooper one negroe girl named Philis and her increase to her and her heirs forever. Item. I give unto Judeth Nance one negroe wench named Luk and all her increase to her and her heirs forever. Item. If I have any more estate not willed nor given away, I give it to JAMES MARSHALL, BENJAMIN MARSHALL and my daughter ANN NANCE to them and their heirs forever. Lastly I nominate and appoint my two sons Samuel Marshall and James Marshall executors of this mt last will and testament and as trustees to see this will executed hereby revoking and disanuling all former wills my be made and declaring this to be my last will and testament.
