John, a linen weaver in Scotland, became a prosperous Vermont farmer. A descendent located the publication of banns of marriage for John and his first wife Mary Dunning, the birth of two sons in the register of Cumbuslang [is Cambuslang meant?], and his second marriage in Glasgow to Jannet Miller March 30, 1786.( J.B. Gilfillian, "Sketches of Our Lands and People" pp 19-20.) His surname does not appear on the 1800 Census of Barnet or Ryegate. John, and sons John Jr and William all head families in Barnet in 1810.
