Willis Doles was the son of James Willis Doles and Mary Ann Mercer Doles. He was born in Southampton County, Virginia. He married Mary Priscilla Shaw in 1844 or 1845 in Webster Parish, Louisiana. They were parents of six children. Besides the children already linked they were parents of Benjamin Franklin and Carrie Louis Doles Pickett.

Mr. Willis Doles died at his residence at Cottage Grove on the 4th instant. Mr. Doles was a native of Virginia, having been born in that State in 1810. He moved to Bossier sixty years ago and remained a citizen of this parish until his death. He was earnest and sincere in everything, true to his convictions and was loved by all who knew him for his goodness of heart, kindly disposition, and his desire to make all who came near him happy.
