This union was blessed with five children, two sons and three daughters. Indeed these children had so far proved a blessing, so that the departed father often thanked God, and praised him for the great blessing in this respect. Undoubtedly many a still prayer have ascended from the cot of suffering to the throne of God, committing the sons and daughters into the care of our heavenly Father.
Sixteen years ago he and his family moved to Decatur, where he alternately worked at his trade as carpenter, or as farmer. While plowing on a farm about thirteen years ago, the plow struck a root, throwing a handle of the plow against his left hip, where years ago he had been injured, while at work in Pennsylvania. Although he now and then felt pain, yet no serious effects of the blow manifested it until four years ago. After investigation the physician stated, that the bone of the thigh was injured and had begun to fester. Two painful operations were performed, but both proved unsuccessful. At that time it was presumed, that his time of departure was near at hand, but months and years, three long years, passed into eternity before he was relieved from his intense suffering and called home, where pain and suffering are no more.
He was an earnest and active member of the German Reformed Church of this city, and served as trustee for six years, until the last election, when his son was elected his successor. The congregation deeply feels its loss, which was also manifested at the funeral, when all that possible could, come to shed a tear of sympathy and see their brother member laid away to await the resurrection morn.
After proving a christian life in adversity, keeping faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to the end he was summoned to pass the valley of death on the 2nd of Sept., 1893, at half past one in the afternoon, attaining the age of 53 years, 3 months and 6 days.
The burial services were conducted under a large attendance of relatives and friends, by the pastor of the Reformed Church on Tuesday, the 5th of Sept.
May the Lord, our Heavenly Father in Christ Jesus be the refuge and source of comfort to the bereaved ones, for we mourn not like those, who have not hope.
