Peter Borger, sr. and early settler of Crooked Creek and
a veteran of the Civil War, died Sunday morning at 7 o'clock at his home of East Main street in Caledonia, after
only a few day's illness. The funeral was held Wednesday
afternoon from the M.E. church where Rev. F.C. Klein of Eitzen officiated. It was in charge of the Odd Fellows of which order the deceased had been a member for many years. Burial was made in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Borger was born in Hessen Dramstadt, Germany, in 1832, and came to America in 1851 with his parents who settled in Ohio. He came west several years later and took a government homestead in Crooked Creek township. He enlisted in the Union army Aug. 17, 1862, and served till the close of the war in 1865. On June 14, 1866, he was married to Miss Marie Prieb, and for several years following their marriage they lived in Brownsville, moving from their on to their homestead in Crooked Creek where they remained till 1906 when they moved to Caledonia. Deceased in survived by his wife and five children, viz. Mrs. Louis Kruger of La Crosse, Mrs. Albert Horn, Mrs. Gottlieb Mann and Peter of Caledonia and John of Hokah. He is also survived by 14 grand-children and one great-grand child.
