Hiram was a farmer, single, and living with the family of his brother Ananias Jones not far from Mount Victory, in Hardin county, Ohio. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted at Kenton, Ohio, on December 8, 1861, in Company A, 82nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. As with many in the service, under the conditions the soldiers lived in, he became ill January 1862 as his unit moved into West Virginia in the dead of winter and began engaging the enemy in earnest. Among other engagements, Hiram fought in the Battles of McDowell, Franklin, and Cross Keys. He was discharged for disability July 10, 1862. He went back to farming and caring for his elderly uncle Thomas Pugh, but never regained his health and was admitted to the Dayton National Home for Disabled Soldiers on May 31, 1867. Hiram passed away July 16 of the same year, age 48.
