Death of Caleb Elphee.

Another old soldier has answered to the last roll call. Mr. Caleb Elphee died at his residence in this city at 5 o'clock this morning after a short illness. Last Friday he was taken suddenly ill and the following Saturday he was prostrated by an attack of paralytic nature. From that time he continued to sink until the final rest came.

Caleb Elphee was born near London, England, June 17, 1817, and was 78 years, 4 months old at the time of his death. He emigrated from his native home in 1857, coming immediately to Minnesota and settling in Chatfield, which he henceforth made his home. He thoroughly identified himself with his adopted country and, when the rebellion broke out promptly offered his services in defense of the Union. He enlisted at Chatfield in Company B of the Fifth Minnesota regiment, Feb. 10, 1862. He served faithfully in the field until his health was broken. Becoming unfit for further service, he was honorably discharged April 30, 1863.

The deceased was a charter member of McKenney Post, G.A.R., of this city. He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church, and prominent for the active part he always took in religious work. He was of kind and affable disposition and the pleasant companion of a large circle of friends. With all the vigor he brought to the performance of what he considered his duty, he carefully guarded himself from giving offense to those with whom he differed. He leaves an aged wife who, not withstanding the feebleness of age was upon her, gave him untiring attention in his last illness. The funeral is expected to be held next Monday at 10 o'clock a.m.
