Melvin Harold Bair, 87, passed away December 24, 2005 at Sunshine Terrace from causes incident to age. He was born October 27, 1918, the son of Katie R. and Henry Parley Bair.
He grew up in Logan and learned construction skills while working with his father in the family plumbing and construction business. He graduated from Logan High School and attended Utah State University. He married Mona Kastli on June 24, 1941. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple, being active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Following their marriage, Mel and Mona moved to Boulder City, Nevada where Mel and his father built several homes. They then moved to Lawrence, Kansas where Mel worked at an ordinance plant prior to enlisting in the US Navy in 1943. He served as a See Bee in the South Pacific Admiralty Island Group building air craft runways. Following completion of his military service in 1945, Mel returned to Logan and went to work at Defense Depot Ogden as a heavy equipment operator.
He retired 35 year later as a supervisor of shipping and receiving. For fun Mel enjoyed building and constructing. He remodeled the family home, which he originally helped build. He could design, build, or fix anything. He purchased a piece of undeveloped recreational property following his retirement, and made it into a retreat enjoyed by all his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mona; two children, Christine B. Laird, and Ralph K. (Lyn) Bair, both of Logan; and one sister, Camilla Parkinson of Sacramento, CA. He has four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mildred B. Cox, and a brother Lloyd P. Bair.
Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at 12 noon in the Dry Canyon Ward, 1350 E. Eastridge Drive, Logan with Bishop Bret Peterson conducting. Friends may call Monday evening at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
