Samuel M. Allston, 88; was State Assemblyman

Ilion: Samuel M. Allston. 88, the oldest-former State Assemblyman in New York State, died Saturday in his home, 32 John St., after a long illness. Mr. Allston also was the oldest exempt fireman of Ilion Volunteer Company No. 1., the dean of the Ilion High School Alumni Association, prominent in the Masonic and Elks fraternities and also a retired employee of Remington Typewriter Co.

He was born Dec 25 1870, at Malden Bridge, Columbia County, son of James and Nancy Mathew Allston. He graduated from Ilion High School in 1888.

Most of his life was spent in this village where he was employed by the Remington Typewriter Company for 48 years. He was superintendent of the assembly division. Mr. Allston also was an auditor for the Ilion Savings and Loan Association for many years. He served three one-year terms in the State Assembly. His first term was under Gov. Benjamin B. O'Dell in 1901, and the next two were under Governor Frank Higgins in 1902 and 1903.

His membership in Ilion Lodge 591 F&AM dates back 66 years and that in the fire company to 1899. He also was a member of Ilion Lodge BPO Elks 1444 since 1923;.of the Ilion Methodist Church and other organizations.

He married the former Alice Hartford on June 1, 1893 in Ilion. She died in 1948. Mr. Allston leaves two sons, Samuel H. Allston, of Los Angeles and James W. Allston, Ilion, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 Tuesday from the Applegate Funeral Home with Rev. Carlton Van Ornum officiating. Burial will be in Armory Hill Cemetery. Ritualistic rites will be conducted by the Masonic Lodge and Ilion Lodge Elks. Masonic members will assemble at the Lodge Rooms at 7PM and will proceed to the funeral home. Ilion Lodge 1444 BPO Elks will meet at 8 for the ritualistic exercises.
