Alexander D. "Sandy" Kippen, of Scotch ancestry, was born April 12, 1865 in Greenfield, Ontario. He grew up on a farm and worked in a cheese factory for a time. In 1887 he came to Bottineau County and homesteaded in Willow Vale Township, getting his deed in January 1889. Two brothers, Robert D. and Duncan, proved up neighboring homesteads. Lumber for the buildings was hauled from Devils Lake and neighbors helped build a barn, granary, and a one room house. The completion was celebrated by having a dance. Land was broken with a team of oxen and a walking plow. In 1896 Sandy married Margaret McMillan in the McBrayan Hotel in Bottineau. Margaret was born of Scotch parents in Maxville, Ontario and came to Bottineau County with her widowed mother and other members of the family to homestead northwest of Omemee. Sandy and Margaret made their home on Sandy's homestead in Willow Vale Township. They were members of the Omemee Presbyterian Church. They had three children, all schooled in Omemee. Sinclair went into the lumber business and married Ruth Johnston, the daughter of Rev. Thomas Johnston. Their daughters were Grace (Chester Blanchard) and Annie (Arnold Braun.)
