Hebern spent most of his childhood in Homer, Licking, Ohio. He was a printer there according to the 1850 census. Around 1856 he moved to Chicago. In 1864 he opened a physician's office in Quincy, Illinois. Two years later he built a house on the southeast corner of Fourth and Elm. The house is still standing today.

Around 1868 he moved back to Chicago where he practiced medicine for decades. In 1896 he lived at 7419 Euclid not far from the future childhood home of Michelle Obama. He died at the home of his fiancee Mrs. Mabel Jackman at 5242 Michigan Ave. According to a tree on Geni, one of his descendants is British actor Sam Claflin whose grandfather was Roy Austin Beaven Claflin. (Another online tree contradicts this and says Sam's grandfather was George K. Claflin, a distant cousin.)
