A memorial service for Hazel G. Bergsgaard, 81, of West Fargo and Maddock, ND was held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock. Interment was in the Viking Lutheran Church Cemetery, south of Maddock. She died on 8 Jun 2001 at her home in West Fargo. Rev William Twynham officiated. Rachel Markestad was born on 28 Sep 1919 to Andreas and Ida Flaskerud Berghagen at their home near Flora. She was raised there and educated at the Flora School. She worked at home and for area families prior to her marriage to Randall Bergsgaard on 26 Oct 1938 in Maddock. The couple made their home in South Viking Township near Maddock, then purchased a farmstead on the north edge of Maddock, which is still there today. He did on 5 Feb 1995. She continued spending summers in Maddock and winters in Arizona until the spring of 2001, when she moved to West Fargo to be closer to her family during her illness with cancer. She was a member of the North Viking Lutheran Church and its WELCA and other organizations. In her younger years she enjoyed playing golf and bowling. While wintering in Arizona over the years, Randall and Hazel enjoyed square dancing. She enjoyed flower and garden projects. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Allen Rudel of West Fargo; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lannis and Sharon Bergsgaard of rural Crookston, MN and Donald and JoAnn Bergsgaard of rural Cavalier; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister Mabel Miller of Devils Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Gilman Berghagen, Norman Berghagen, Oscar Berghagen, Alvin Berghagen and Lloyd Berghagen; a sister, Ilma and a grandson Paul Rudel.
