Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Kuyper studied literature, philosophy and theology at Leiden University. After his promotion to Doctor in Theology in 1862, he became a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1879, he founded the first political party in the Netherlands, the Anti-Revolutionary Party (ARP), a Protestant conservative and Christian democratic political party. A year later he founded the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 1886 Kuyper led a split from the Dutch Reformed Church. The new church would be called the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands. During the 1901 General Election, Kuyper was named Prime Minister of the Netherlands in a coalition between the ARP and the Catholics. He served as minister of Home Affairs at the same time. The ARP lost the 1905 General Election and Kuyper was succeeded by Theo de Meester as Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Kuyper remained the leader of the ARP until his death.
