Jacob married Catherine Summey (Katherine Summi) May 9, 1803. After her death, he married Elizabeth Rhodes.
According to Elizabeth Hoyle Rucker in her book, "Genealogy of Peiter Heyl...", Jacob was a German Reformed until he was fifty years old. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1829 and was licensed to preach. He continued to preach until his death, four years after the church was divided over slavery. Rucker gives the date of his death as March 18, 1848. Although he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at his death, he was buried at Grace Lutheran Cemetery. This church has also been known as Grace German Reformed and Lutheran Church.
