Andrew McCormick represented Sangamon County three times in the State Legislature, and was one of the "Long Nine." He was Mayor of Springfield in 1843 and '44, and was a man of great physical strength, standing six feet two and one half inches in height, and weighing two hundred and eighty pounds. He died January 24, 1857.

According to the 1850 census, Andrew was born in Tennessee and was a stone mason in Springfield, IL. There was no listing of his death and burial in the Oak Ridge records; most likely moved from another cemetery since he died before the cemetery was built.

Died, in this city, on Saturday night last, Andrew M'Cormick, aged about 60 years. There are few of our older citizens who were not acquainted with Andrew M'Cormick. He became a resident of Sangamon county about 30 years ago. He has held offices here, civil and military. He was for two terms a member of the legislature, and at one period, Mayor of this city. He was a man of commanding size, with a rough exterior; had a sound, well informed, but an uneducated mind, (if a knowledge of letters, grammar and rhetoric constitute education.) He had read much; was tolerably well versed in the history of the country; had a good understanding of scripture; and had endeavored to enrich his mind with knowledge drawn from the stores of nature. He was to some extent a practical, if not a scientific geologist, and one would sit and listen to his theories with an interest that they could hardly understand themselves.

Andrew M'Cormick was the son of a distinguished Irishman, who was compelled to leave Ireland when Emmet was hung for treason to the British king, and his father came to our land with Duane, Binns and their colleagues. He wandered away into North Caroline, as we believe, and married - had children, of whom Andrew was one. The child grew up to be a man - lived and delved in the tar region - removed to Kentucky-thence to Tennessee, where he was long engaged in the iron business - finally, to better his broken fortunes, he came to the Sangamon country in early days; - here his life was one of constant labor in various employments - (for Andrew M'Cormick never ate the bread of idleness;) and when he was taken with that disease which has carried him beyond the storms and tolls of life, (pneumonia), to the peaceful haven of repose, where, we trust, he sleeps sweetly; - he was engaged in clearing land to raise means for the support of his family.

Andrew M'Cormick was not without his faults; - they were mostly of his early education, amid the rude scenes of border life; but if there be one who is not without fault, let him cast a stone at this humble tribute to the memory of a man of no ordinary mould, who has thus departed from the land of the living.
