Ralph Leonard Davidson was the youngest of nine children born to James Orville Davidson (1825-1899) and Mary Elizabeth (Linville) Davidson (1838-1914), both Pioneers who came to Oregon before it was a state, in 1847 and 1846, with their respective parents. They had married July 30, 1851 and settled on their donation land claim in what would become Buena Vista, in Polk County, Oregon. Ralph Leonard was born on Apr 22, 1883 on the family's farm. His father died in Ralph's 16th year of life, when he was a student, attending school, and helping his family with the farm's many chores. In 1900, he was living with his widowed mother and nephew, Ardell Davidson "Dell" Grigsby, attending school and helping the hired hand with farm work, when the census was taken on June 22nd, 1900. by 1910, when the next census was taken (May 5th, 1910), Ralph was listed as the Farmer, renting the land. He had attended college for two years. His nephew, Dell, was no longer working (possibly due to back/spinal issues listed in the 1880 census). Ralph's mother stated she had her own income (most likely "farm rent" paid to her by her son) and they had a hired hand to help out on the donation land claim. On Oct 25th, 1911, Ralph married Arlie Ellen Gibbs in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. She was one of three children who had been born in Gresham, Multnomah County, Oregon, to Roy Wilson Gibbs and Annie Mary (Winters) Gibbs. Ralph and Arlie lived on the donation land claim in Buena Vista. Their son, Linville P. Davidson, was born on Aug 3rd, 1918. In 1920, the young family was still living on the donation land claim with Ralph farming the land and his nephew, Ardell "Dell", living adjacent to them. Dell died in 1922 at the age of 45 yrs. Following his death, Ralph, Arlie and young Linville moved to a family farm on what is now Kane Road, Gresham, Oregon. In 1930, it was valued at $1,500 and Ralph had become a Plumber to support his family. Linville, a school student, began to help his father farm their land in Multnomah County. Following graduation, Linville joined the Army, and was discharged after serving honorably during World War II. When the 1940 Census was taken (Apr 20), Ralph was still a plumber, Arlie worked at the cannery seasonally, and Linville farmed their land. After 57 years of marriage, Arlie died on Feb 9th, 1969. She was buried at Gresham Pioneer Cemetery, Gresham, Multnomah Co., Oregon, where her parents had been interred. Ralph, probably missing his beloved wife and mourning her loss, passed away just seven months later on July 8th, 1969, and was buried next to his beloved wife at Gresham Pioneer Cemetery, Multnomah County, Oregon. Their son never married, that I am aware of, and died Oct 20th, 1996. He is buried at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. May they all Rest at Peace.
