James Bainter was a son of George and Lydia (Sprague) Bainter. James, a farmer, married Huldah McClary September 27, 1825, in Coshocton County, Ohio. They lived in Coshocton and Muskingum counties, Ohio, before moving to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where they were living at the 1840 Census. By 1850, the family had moved to Macon County, Illinois, where James died.

According to census information, Huldah was born in Maryland. She was was born about 1800 and a little older than James. She died in [or before] October 1856 in Macon County, Illinois, where her probate is recorded. The warrant to appraise her estate was issued October 27, 1856. There is a record of purchasing a coffin ($9) in the probate papers, and her son William was the administrator of her estate. She is most likely buried next to her husband James in Salem Cemetery, but the cemetery records have no record of the burial.

James and Huldah had four known children:

1. William, born in Coschocton, Ohio, 1826
2. Julia, born in Ohio, 1829
3. John born in Ohio, 1836, and
4. Henry, born in Indiana, 1840

The Bainter family genealogy indicates James Bainter was born 6 Jan 1802. The inscription given for this stone would indicate a birth date of 1 Jan 1802. Perhaps the inscription is wrong, perhaps the inscription actually says 51y 11m 12d, perhaps his birth date was actually 1 Jan. This information needs to be checked.
