Thomas Janney was the son of Joseph Janney (b.abt 1735 in Bucks Co., PA) and Hannah Jones (b.30 Dec 1742). He was the 4th of 10 children--4 boys and 6 girls. Thomas Janney was a wealthy merchant and ship owner of Alexandria, Virginia who had a plantation with slaves. His plantation was (by family stories) near Mount Vernon. On 28 Apr 1796 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania he married Sarah Elizabeth Henkel. About 1830 he and wife Sarah with several of their children came to Crawford County, Illinois where he died in 1832. Thomas and Sarah were the parents of 6 children all born in Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia:
