Dr. Kay at the age of 9 was brought from his native home in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania, to West Alexandria, Ohio, in the autumn of 1836. On November 4, 1837 he was rendered fatherless.
Dr. Kay's residences in Darke County, Ohio were intermittent and variable, extending from the year 1840, when the county had a population of 13,145 until the year 1845. As a boy he attended a country school one mile east of Ithaca, Ohio, and near a spot new called Gordon, Darke County.
