Johann Georg "George" Hetzl (Hetzel) was born at Schäferei (Schaeferei), Stadt Waldmünchen, Kreis Cham, Bavaria, Germany. His parents were Joachim Hetzel and Barbara Bücherl. Per citizenship papers (Declaration of Intention), he emigrated to America in April 1888 at the age of 23 at the Port of New York. George worked on the Joseph Frank farm for three years. On November 15, 1898, he married Barbara Pfeiffer (a twin), at St. Luke Catholic Church in Plain, Sauk County, Wisconsin. They had six children: Louis, Rose, Leo, Agnes, Mary, and Herman Hetzel.


Obituary: George Hetzel Dies at 95, Came from Germany at 16. George Hetzel, 95, died Sunday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Raymond Lins of Spring Green. Born in Germany, June 13, 1864, he came to the United States when he was 16 years old. He farmed in the town of Spring Green until he moved to Plain 29 years ago. He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Plain and the Holy Name Society of the church. Surviving are one son, Leo, of Spring Green; three daughters, Mrs. Raymond Lins of Spring Green, and Mrs. Jacob Schauer and Mrs. Leo Weiss of Sauk City; 29 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, and two sons, Herman and Louis. Funeral services for Mr. Hetzel were held Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. from the Hetzel home in Plain, and at 9:30 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Plain with the Rev. Raymond McAleer officiating.
