Allen Summers was born about 1798, probably in Lee County, Virginia prior to his parents moving into Wayne County, Kentucky. The 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri (p. 153) says that when he came to the area that is now Vernon County, he located on the south bank of the Osage River. Here he lived until his death, which occurred in 1849, when he was in his fifty-first year.

Excerpts from the 1887 History:
The first actual settlements of Vernon county, by individuals with the intent of making their future and permanent homes here, were made in the year 1829, by Jesse J. Summers, Moses Summers and Allen Summers, three brothers, and their location was on the Osage [River], in the northern part of this county, in what is now Metz township. Jesse and Moses came with their families in the spring, and located on the north side of the Osage, and their brother Allen came in the fall and settled on the south side.

All three of these pioneers and their wives died here, and their bodies were buried near Pleasant Valley, in the Summers graveyard. The land comprising this graveyard and the tract adjoining were originally cleared by the Summers family.

They were good, honest, well-meaning men, kind neighbors and excellent citizens in more than one respect. Simple in their habits and tastes, they did not seek to make a bustle in the world, but --
Along the cool sequestered vale of life,
They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.
