Dolph served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-17G #42-102422, 816th Bomber Squadron, 483rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Berrien County, Michigan prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January, 22 1943 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of electrical machinery and accessories and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #42-102422 took off from Sterparone, Italy on a bombing mission over Memmingen, Germany. Prior to "bombs away" they, along with 6 other B-17's, were attacked by an "overwhelming" number of German fighter aircraft.

B-17G #42-102422, along with other B-17's, were shot down and crashed near Memmingen during the war. The entire crew, except for S/Sgt. Jaski, of #42-102422 were lost in this crash.

Dolph was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on September 27, 1951.

Service # 36421479

Dolph also has a "Cenotaph" in the Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, Michigan with his parents.
( see family links below )

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
