Husband of Margaret ZIEGLER (1768-1853)

Judge George TROUT was born in Bart Twp, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of the Rev. Hans Michael TRAUT (1730-1780) and Catherine Elizabeth BERGER (circa 1735-circa 1777).

George TROUT married Margaret ZIEGLER in about 1788, perhaps in Chambersburg, Franklin, PA.

George, in his minor days, had learned the potter trade, and established his own business on the Monongahela River in Westmoreland County until he moved his family to Perry County, Ohio in 1812, where he continued his occupation in the town of Somerset and also established himself as an innkeeper. After the Indian Wars, he organized a Militia Company and served as Captain for many years. In July, 1818, George was named Associate Judge, Court of Common Pleas, Perry County, OH, in place of close friend David Beckwith, recently deceased. Active in community affairs, Judge Trout helped lobby for the bill establishing Perry County, donated the land for the old courthouse, and participated in Democrat politics. He was Lutheran in religion. Their son, George, married Frances Cowen and they raised a family in Section 3 of Hopewell Township, some descendants of whom yet live in the area. Their daughter, Margaret, married the renowned Reverend Andrew Henkel of the Lutheran congregation and emigrated to Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio. The other seven children of Judge George Trout and Margaret (Zeigler) Trout were all exemplary citizens of the state. Judge Trout died in 1829, his wife on the 20th of April 1853. Her burial was in the old Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery on Gay Street in Somerset.
