Mary was born July 5, 1859 in Naruto-por, Vlocam County, Bohemia to Dominic and Ann Brazda. At the age of 9, she came to America with her parents and 3 brothers, setting at Baltimore. Later the family moved to a homestead near Olean, Dodge County.
In 1877, at the age of 18, she married Joseph Kafka Sr at Olean. They settled on Joseph's homestead, now known as the John Engelhardt farm. Later they bought farm 7 miles north and three, west of West Point where they lived until they retired to town in 1918. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1925.
Mary lived alone, on the farm following her husband's death in 1931, until old age forced her to reside at the. home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Wehrer. She made many friends in her long life which was lived in a simple and happy way.
Survived by her children, Joseph, John, Katie (Fred) Wehzer and Mary (Alphonse) Heard; 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; sister, Nettie Grewek; and brother, R. Brazda.
Funeral services were conducted Sept 20th at 9:30 a.m. in the Holy Cross church in Beemer, which she attended regularly. Rev. J. P. Devan was officiating pastor and burial was in the Holy Cross cemetery in Beemer. The Pallbearers were Edward Kafka, Joseph, Jerome and James Brazda, Henry Kmoch, Elmer Hake and Edward Kafka.
