William J. "Bill" Carlisle, 87, Casselton, ND, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. He was born July 2, 1922 in Fargo, to Margaret (Mitchell) and Frank J. Carlisle, the youngest of three boys. He graduated from Fargo High School and attended NDSU. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He married Martha Louise Dahl on December 31, 1947. They lived and farmed at Chaffee, ND, and raised five children. Bill and Martha retired from farming and moved to Casselton in 2002. Bill was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Leonard and the Silver Threads Senior Citizens, Casselton and the Casselton Masonic Lodge. He served on the Chaffee school board, the St. Peter's Lutheran Church council, the Chaffee Farmers Elevator board. He was a charter member of the Chaffee Lion's Club.

Bill loved his wife and family, and his love was returned many fold. Bill enjoyed traveling with his wife, Martha. He also took much pleasure in good music, beautiful boats, steam locomotives, a good book, and his dog, Charley.

He is survived by his children, Kathryn (Robert) Baldner, Susan (David) Schmidt, Elizabeth (David) Boyle, Brian Carlisle and Joan Carlisle, and Barbara (Ronald) Arneson; grandchildren, Bob (Theresa) Baldner, Christy (Greg) Castronovo, Jennifer Baldner, Dan (Magda) Schmidt, Sam Schmidt, Patrick (Anna) Boyle, Peter (Abbie) Boyle, Jim Carlisle, Sara Carlisle, Angie Carlisle, John Arneson and Paul Arneson, and great grandsons Myles and Henry Boyle and one brother, Frank (Marion) Carlisle of Green Valley, AZ.

Bill is also survived by his friend and honorary daughter, Michelle Bresnahan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha, his parents, and his brother, John.

The family requests that memorials be sent directly to the charity of your choice.

Visitation: Sunday, November 8, 2009 from 5 to 7 in West Funeral Chapel, Casselton, with a prayer service at 7.

Funeral Service: Monday, November 9, 2009 at 11 in St. Peter Lutheran Church, rural Leonard, ND.

Burial: Watson Cemetery, rural Leonard.
