German Lieutenant General. Knight's Cross Holder. He joined the German army as a cadet in 1903. He served in Infantry Regiment 113, where he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1906 and Captain in 1916, when he was appointed to command a company. In February 1918, he was called for service in the General Staff and in June 1918 to the staff of the 45th Reserve Division. After the war, he remained in the army and served as a company commander in various regiments. In 1926, he moved to Breslau as adjutant to the commander of that city and then was promoted to Major in 1929, serving on the staff of Infantry Regiment 14. He was named commander of this division in 1930 and then promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on the staff of the 5th Division in 1933 and then the V Army Corps in 1934. Transfer to the Army Personal office as head of a bureau and promotion to Colonel followed in 1936. He was given command of the 18th Infantry division with a promotion to Major General in 1939 and Lieutenant General in 1940. His division fought in the Battles of Poland and France and served as occupation troops after the victory over France. He was killed in a training accident by friendly artillery fire. He was awarded the Iron Cross First and Second Class in both World War I and World War II and the Knight's Cross in June 1940.
