"Mrs. George Swartz, age 81 years and 19 days, died at the Swartz home west of town (Athens) last Friday evening after a short illness, the result of paralysis. Mrs. Swartz who maiden name was McInterfer, was born in Three Rivers, MI and bore the distinction of being the second white girl to be born in St. Joseph County.
She was married to Mr. Swartz June 24, 1849 and the family settled in this vicinity fifty years ago, having lived on their present farm since 1880. She leaves to mourn their loss her aged husband, five sons and two daughters: John, Will and Forest of this place (Athens); Ralph (the dentist) of California; A. D. of Indianapolis; Mrs. Libbie Johnson of Battle Creek, MI, and Mrs. Mary (Aunt Dot) Johnson who resides at home. The funeral was held from the family home with Rev. Albright officiating; burial in the Burr Oak Cemetery."
