"Mr. John Fitzsimmons, one of our aged and esteemed citizens, died at the home of his son, Richard, in Clover Township on the 3d inst., (9-3-1887) in the seventy-third year of his age. The deceased was born in Ireland in the year 1814, and accompanied by his brothers and sisters came to the country when he was about 16 years old. He lived in Johnstown, Pennsylvania two years, then came to Jefferson County where he married to Mrs. Eliza Tweedy in the year 1833. They lived in their pleasant home near Corsica until seven years ago when the wife was called away by the hand of death. For the last two years, Mr. Fitzsimmons spent most of his time at the homes of his sons and daughters. Shortly after locating in this country and while still quite young, he united with the Jefferson Associate, now United Presbyterian Church, when it was under the pastoral care of Rev. McAuley. In 1855 he was ordained and installed ruling elder in said congregation which office he faithfully filled these many years. His physical sufferings were long and severe, yet so quietly borne, that few if any guessed their severity. At last, worn out, he quietly passed away, cherishing a faith in Him he so long and faithfully served. He has gone, we feel, to join the general assembly of the redeemed."

The Brookville Republican had a similar obit posted the same day with this addition:

"In his death the community has lost a good citizen, and the church a staunch defender of the truth. Suitable resolutions were adopted by the session of the congregation in which he was a member, and have been published in the papers of the church."
