Eliza was first married to Robert Tweedy, and they had 2 sons, William b 1830 and Robert b 1832. In the 1850 census William and Robert were listed with the surname Fitzsimmons, with the rest of John and Eliza's children. Census records have Robert living in PA in 1860, 1870, 1880, then in Kansas in 1900, beside William. Census records have William living in Illinois in 1880, KS in 1885, 1895, 1900 and 1910.

There has been some discussion about her maiden name, some say Cox, some say Hindman. Looking at her children's death certificates, Clarence and Lucinda have her maiden name listed as Eliza Cox, Richard's says Eliza Tweedy and Marion's says "don't know".
