George W.Betzer one of the best known retired farmers in Decatur,died in his home, 956 W.Grand Ave, yesterday afternoon age 74 years.He had been ill for six months. Diabetes was the immediate cause of death. The funeral probably will be conducted in the First Christian church Thursday afternoon. Dunham post GAR in charge. Burial will be in a vault.The body later to be removed to the family mausoleum in Union cemetery which he had been engaged in constructing and which is not quite completed.
Mr.Betzer was a farmer up to the time of his retirement 14 yeas ago. He owned a 400 acre farm near Oreana besides 120 acres in Colorado. He was for 27 years a highway commissioner of Whitmore township and for nearly the same length of time a member of the school directorate. He was a man of prominence in his community and had made and kept many friends since coming to Decatur.
Mr.Betzer enlisted in Co.A 41st Illinois Infantry but was so severely wounded in the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862 that he was unfit for further service. He was born in Ohio and came to this state with his parents when less than a year old. They settle in Oreana.
Mr. Betz was twice married. His first wife was Catherine Coleman. To them were born five sons,Louis E and Francis C both of who are on the farm there and one half miles south east of Oreana, Alfred J. of Lexington, Neb. and Chester C. who is on a farm in this county. His first wife died in 1898 and in 1901 Mr. Betzer was married to Miss Daisy Kinney. To this union was born a daughter, Georgia D. Betzer.
Mr. Betzer was a member of the First Christian church and of Dunham post. He was a man of methodical habits and his affairs were well arranged before his death.
