Luther was born in Jefferson County, New York to Thaddeus Houghton Allen and Lucy Clark. His mother dying at his birth in 14 May 1844. In 1845 Luther moved with his family to Oxford County, Ontario, Canada then in 1855 to St. Clair County, Michigan.
He was in the 10th Michigan Volunteer Infantry from 1862 to 1865. After the war he homesteaded in Detroit Twp. Woodward County, Oklahoma living on 160 acres in a sod covered house.
After his first wife Emma Carless died in 1910, he married Gladys Reamar in Post, Garza County, Texas on 09 Feb.1914.
They moved to Roosevelt County New Mexico and lived on 320 acres in which a land grant was issued to them in 1922, five years after his death.
