Nicholas "Mickey" Matviya, 92, of Blairsville (Bairdstown), passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital, Latrobe. The son of Andy Matviya Sr. and Mary (Kochis) Matviya, he was born June 20, 1917, in the village of Peanut. Mr. Matviya was a member of S.S. Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Rural Letter Carriers Association, VFW Post 5821, the 24th Infantry Division Association, National Rifle Association and the Blairsville Sportsmen's Club. He loved to hunt groundhogs. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the South Pacific for over three years with the 24th Division, 11th Field Artillery. He graduated from Derry Township High School in 1934 and retired in 1980 from the Blairsville Post Office as a rural mail carrier on RR3 after 35 years of employment. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mildred "Peaches" (Gamble) Matviya, whom he married May 13, 1948; a son, Thomas and his wife Mary Anne, of McKees Rocks; and a daughter, Patricia Benyo and husband John, Latrobe; a grandson, David Benyo, of Irwin; a brother, Mike and his wife Katherine, Port St. Lucie, Fla.,; a sister, Anna Groft and husband Bill, of Blairsville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Andy Jr. and John; and a sister, Mary Yuzawich. Friends were received in the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville. A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday in S.S. Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, with Father Chester J. Raimer as the celebrant. Interment was in S.S. Simon and Jude Cemetery, Blairsville. Military services were accorded by the Blairsville VFW Post 5821 and American Legion Post 0407.
