Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 19 Mar 1863 p3: "DEATH OF CAPT. AYER---Captain John Ayer of this city, who has been a wounded prisoner in the hands of the rebels for some months, died at the Libby Prison in Richmond about three weeks since. His age was 36 years. He was the Commander of Co. H, 16th Maine regiment, which was attached to Gen. Franklin's Grand Division of the Army of the Potomac, and was foremost in the assault upon the lines in the battle of Fredericksburg.He was a son of John Ayer, Esq., of this city. [Bangor Whig]"
