Canaan Courts was born to John Counts and Phoebe McReynolds and he married Anna Musick.
His children were Solomon, Squire, John, Floyd and William Pilate.
In 1850 he was farming in Russell County, Virginia with Anna and baby Solomon, next door to Anna's family of origin. By 1860 Squire, Pilate and John had been born and they were still in Russell County.
On July 10, 1861 he enlisted in Company A of the 29th Virginia Infantry as a drummer. He mustered out from that CSA unit and rejoined Co.E of the 21 Virginia Cavalry CSA on Sept 15, 1862.
He is described as 5' 7" with blue eyes and red hair.
In 1873 he shows up in court in Litchfield, MN with son, Pilate as Pilate is found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to 2 years in Stillwater Prison.
In 1891 he homesteaded 80 acres of land in Litchfield, Minnesota.
In the 1900 census Canaan was listed as a widower living with William's family in Central Point, Jackson County, Oregon. His wife apparently died in the Cottage Grove area of Lane County as he is buried next to her. Oddly enough her headstone inscription says, "Mother 1832-1903".
