Lillie Butler Freeman, 95, former owner of Freeman's Florist in Poquoson with her son Paul and daughter Joyce Tracy, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, singing within her heart, "What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see; and I look upon His face – the one who saved me by His grace . . . " (Ben Spear, 1955) Mrs. Freeman, or "Nannie" as she was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as to many others, was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Austin Freeman; her son, Paul R. Freeman; her daughter, Lillie F. Benton; her parents, Julia Smith and J. Garrett Butler; her brothers, Boyd C. Butler and G. Joseph Butler; and her sister, Julia B. Presson. She leaves to rejoice at her presence during this life and to grieve at her going, her daughter, Joyce F. Tracy; her son, B. Austin Freeman, Jr. and wife, Melba; five grandchildren, Paulette B. Holloway & husband, Kenny, E. DeeVee Green & husband, Vernon, Connie T. Andre & husband, Nick, Timothy A. Freeman & wife, Donna, and R. Kelly Freeman. In addition, she leaves eleven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Etta B. Thompson; a son-in-law, Paul Benton; and many nieces and nephews. Family was a cornerstone of her life. She relished the time spent with all of her family and friends. Living in Poquoson for over 78 years, Mrs. Freeman was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church and the Joyful Hearts Choir, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Besides her love of flowers and cardinals, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting. The family will receive friends Friday, 7-8:30 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, and other times at 13 Carroll Drive, Poquoson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2:00 PM, at Emmaus Baptist Church, by Pastor John Pouchot and Rev. Milford Rollins. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. Memorial contributions may be made to the Poquoson Fire & Rescue Squad, 830 Poquoson Ave., or Emmaus Baptist Church Building Fund, 814 Yorktown Rd., both in Poquoson, VA, 23662.
