One of Our Business Men
Among the best known and most prominent business men of the city is Mr. Albert Cahn, Senior member of the well known firm of Cahn Bros., clothiers. Mr. Cahn was born in Prussia, Germany in 1855, attended West Chester College and graduated in 1859 at 17 years of age. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the 10th Indiana Infantry, re-enlisted and commanded Company H 135 Indiana Volunteers to the close of the war. Mr. Cahn came to Missouri in 1866 and commenced business in this city in 1869 and is now the representative of the oldest clothing house in the county. He was married in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1876 to Miss Ella Katzenberger and has one son. For four years, or from 1874 to 1878 he was cashier of the Bank of Carthage and secretary and treasurer of the Carthage Woolen Mills and has always taken an active interest in all public enterprises, giving much of his time and means to advance all measures of public benefit to our city and county. In politics, Mr. Cahn has always been a Republican, taking an active interest in the party's welfare, yet never seeking office or allowing his name to be used in connection with any office. As a public speaker he is always in demand, his ready wit and humor, streaked with sound logic, making him very popular on the rostrum, as he is as a business man and among all his associates.

The above is a house popular for courteous treatment and the first class goods which it carries. It was established in 1869, and is located in the opera house block, in a commodious room 25 x 100, with glass front and lighted with electric light and gas. It is the oldest established house, in its line, in southwest Missouri.
Between $30,000 and $40,000 in stock is carried, consisting of a full and complete line of clothing, hats, caps, furnishing goods, etc. Besides the main store room, a storage room, 20 x 30 is used. A. Cahn is a native of Germany and came to America about thirty-eight years ago, and has been in Carthage since 1869. He is an enterprising citizen, and has had years of experience int he clothing business.

The Carthage Light Guard was organized January 3, 1876, and for years typified the flower and chivalry of the city of Carthage. The following is a light of the original members, who composed this once famous military organization:

Until the 'nineties there was no prescribed uniform for the State Militia and each organization chose and paid for its own equipment, except the rifles which were furnished by the state of Missouri and were of the same pattern as the United States Army used.
The Carthage Light Guard uniform was of cadet gray and the company presented a neat appearance. Captain Garrison was a good drill master and the company attained a high state of proficiency under his captaincy.
On July 6, 1876, a beautiful silk flag was presented to the Light Guard by the citizens of Carthage. A.L. Thomas making the presentation speech. The company gave an annual military ball on the 22nd of February and it was always the social event of the year.
First was Captain Benjamin J Garrison who resigned in 1878 and second, was succeeded by Thomas Benton Tuttle, who after serving as captain about two years resigned, then third William King Caffee was chosen his successor until OCT 1883, then fourth C C Allen till MAR 1887. then fifth William King Caffee again till made regimental commander, then sixth November 1890 George H Thomas till November 1894, then seventh Carl Raymond Gray till March 1896, then eight John Ard McMillan during Spanish American war, ninth was John Harrison Baily, then tenth by William Edwin Hiatt.
