Eugene "Gene" Walters, 86, of the 2000 block of Thomas Bishop Lane, Virginia Beach, VA, passed away November 4, 2009, in Virginia Beach General Hospital. A native of Vincennes, Indiana, he was the son of the late Rumold and Marie Walters. Gene was the CEO Emeritus of the Farm Fresh Supermarket chain. He was President of the National Grocers Association and was on the Board of Directors of the Food Marketing Institute. He was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, served on the Board of Directors of Sun Trust Bank and the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University. Gene is survived by his wife of 65 years, Juanita Walters; his two daughters, Barbara Walters Doehrman and husband Steven of Brooklyn, NY, and Linda Walters Croker and husband Thomas of Alexandria, VA; his sister, Rose Marie Mitchell of Inman, SC; three grandchildren, Kelly Hering and husband Alan of Oak Hill, VA, Amy Cordier and husband Alex of Rockville, MD, and Thomas Croker, Jr. and wife Anne Ashley of Alexandria, VA; and three great-grandchildren, Alan Hering, Jr., Abbi Hering and Annie Hering. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church with Dr. Prentis McGoldrick officiating. The burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
