Wasilla resident Alfred Reyes, 77, died Jan. 26, 2006, from cancer at his home in Wasilla. Public visitation was held at Valley Funeral Home Chapel in Wasilla. A graveside service was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
Mr. Reyes was born March 22, 1928, in the Philippines. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1966. Mr. Reyes was a resident of Anchorage from 1977 until 2004, when he moved to Wasilla. His hobbies were coin collecting and mahjong. His family said: "Our father was a wonderful man. He sacrificed and worked hard to provide both his son and daughter with a college education. In retirement he lived his life to the fullest. Grandpa Al was always available to his family and friends, whether for a needed haircut or a fourth for mahjong. Alfred was loved by his grandchildren, especially 4-year-old Sophia, who sang to him and helped him smile until the end."
Mr. Reyes is survived by his son, Emmanuel Reyes of Wasilla; daughter, Generosa Hartley of Belleville, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Katrina Reyes; son-in-law, Lee Hartley, grandchildren, Jonathan, Despine and Christina Hartley of Belleville and Sophia Reyes of Wasilla. He is preceded in death by his wife, Calliope "Kellie" Reyes. Memorial donations may be made to Mat-Su Regional Hospice, 3051 E. Palmer-Wasilla Highway, Wasilla 99654.
