John was the eldest son of Crawford and Mary Ann Howe Dobson. He had an older sister, Violet Amanda, and a younger brother, William.

He married Sarah Jane Kenyon, daughter of Oliver Perry and Hannah Adeliah Reynolds Keynon, on January 20, 1885, in Herndon, Guthrie County, Iowa, but lived in Bayard, Guthrie County, Iowa.

There, they had three children, Albert Oliver, Mary Etta, and Daisy Adelia Dobson. Then in 1889, they moved to Lajara, Colorado by way of covered wagon, where they had another son, Franklin Harison, in May of 1890. Then moving again, to Antonito, Colorado, and having another son, Ora Blane in December, 1891.

The family then returned to Bayard, Iowa and had two more children, Charlie Edward, in October 1894, and Lottie Jane, in August, 1896. Again moving, to Herndon, Iowa, and having Loren John in October 1899, Ralph Clarance in March, 1901, Pansy Imogene in June 1903, Lillian Roseline in August, 1905, and then Theadore Hiram in March, 1910.

They moved again, near Des Moines, and then John decided to move to Minnesota near Lake Crystal, where they lived for several years. In the early to mid 1930's, John
and Sarah lived with their youngest son, Theadore, on a farm near Boone, Iowa, and then in late 1930's and early 1940's they lived with their son Franklin in Jefferson,
Iowa, on a small dairy farm.

Then they moved into town after their home burned down. Later they lived in Scranton, Iowa, until their deaths.
