Smitty was born Nov. 8, 1925, to Claud Newton and Ila Clevenger. He graduated from Carter-Riverside High School and was drafted soon after into the U.S. Army and served in the Army Air Corps.
Upon his discharge from the service, he worked as a floral artist for Gordon Boswell. Smitty later attended a flight training school and after graduation went to work as a commercial pilot for Braniff Airlines for 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Mack Clevenger.
Survivors: Beloved wife of 60 years, Dorothy Clevenger; brother, Joe Clevenger and wife, Joyce; numerous other relatives and friends.
