INSTANTLY KILLED

Mark Bedell, One of the Old Residents, Has His Neck Broken

On Thursday afternoon, December 26, while on his way to his farm, which is located about two miles east of the city, Mark bedell was thrown, or fell, from a hayrack, and his neck broken, killing him instantly. He left the city in the company with Alterback, a neighbor, and when near the residence of W. E. James, the team became unmanageable and ran away. Alterback was driving, and while going down the hill east of the James corner, Mr. bedell was either thrown from the wagon, or dropped through the loosely constructed bottom, evidently striking on the back of his head. His neck was broken and there was a cut on the head and face where a wheel struck him. The team ran over the railroad grade, and was brought to a standstill against the fence. Alterback came back to look after his companion, and found him dead. Several persons were soon attracted to the spot, and Deputy Coroner McMasters was summoned, and ordered the body be taken to the city hall, where an examination of the remains was made, and he decided that there was no occasion for an inquest.

Makr Bedell was about sixty-nine years of age. He came to this city in 1865, and in company with C. M. Hinman opened a blacksmith shop in the building recently rebuilt into a dwelling by his son-in-law, George Jenkins. The firm subsequently dissolved, Mr. Hinman withdrawing, and Mr. bedell continuing the business at the same place. Several years ago he closed out of the business and purchased a farm east of the city, where he has since resident, with the exception of some time spent on a farm at Birch lake. He leaves a wife and three children, Charles, and Mrs. George Jenkins of this city, and Mrs. William Wilson, who lives in Menahga.
