Asa Butler was the son of Elijah Butler and Naomi Viles. He married Rosina A. Farnsworth at Geneva, Wisconsin, January 26, 1854. He later moved to Humboldt County, California, where he enlisted as a private at Eureka April 18, 1863, and was mustered into Company A, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers. Private Butler was mustered out at Fort Humboldt, California, April 25, 1865 (Orton, p. 833). Asa filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Humboldt County September 4, 1890, and received application No. 946,681, and certificate No. 660,465. He refiled for his pension in Humboldt County March 19, 1907. Asa Butler died at Petrolia, California, and was buried in this cemetery (Pension File, NARA).
