ANTHONY M. JAMES
Mr. Anthony M. James, one of Lucas county's very early pioneers, and one of our most respected residents, departed this life on Tuesday, May 24, following a stroke of apoplexy. He had been in failing health for several years.
Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. W. Goodsell, were held at the M. E. church on Friday forenoon at 10:30 o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery.
Anthony M. James was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, on May 24, 1847, and died on his 74th birthday. He moved with his parents to Lucas county, Iowa in 1852 and this county was his home for 69 years.
On October 26, 1876, he was united in marriage to Sarah J. Roberts, who passed away on April 5, 1918. To them were born four children, all of whom are living and were present at the last sad rites. They are Mrs. Olive Malone, of Amberg, Wisc.; Vern C. James, of Chariton; Mrs. Nelle M. Parsons, of Des Moines; and Miss Lura G. James, of Cedar Rapids.
Mr. James had been almost a life long member of the M. E. church and was one of its most active workers and faithful attendants until his health failed.
He was a man of strict integrity and upright character, and was a devoted husband and father, and a kind neighbor. During his long residence here he had won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. A good man has gone to his heavenly home and his well earned rest.
