Born in Dysart, Scotland
Charles Duncan, the son of Walter and Isabel Hay Duncan, was born 21 Jan 1823 in Dysert, Fifeshire, Scotland. He worked in a rock quarry. He married Margaret Bowman, daughter of William and Margaret Snedden in 1843. They had a son, Walter who was born in February 1845 in Dysert and died in January of 1847 and a son William born in 1847 and died in 1848. They moved to Kirkcoldy to help take care of her parents. There they met the missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were baptized in the ocean behind the Bowman home on January 10, 1848. Charles was injured at the rock quarry and his right arm and elbow were crushed. They wanted to go to America and left even thought he was still badly injured. They sailed on the ship "Kennebec" leaving Liverpool on 10 Jan 1852 and arriving in New Orleans on 19 March 1852. To help save his arm, Charles and Margaret asked the captain to let them get into the lifeboat so the cold salt water could help heal his arm. They did that until his arm got better. Charles, Margaret, Margaret's mother and daughter, Margaret , were on board the ship. On April 12, 1853 they were in the David Wilkin wagon company leaving Council Bluffs and arrived in Salt Lake City on May 25, 1853. Charles was 30, Margaret was 31 and daughter, Margaret, was 8. They lived in Centerville and the next spring they moved to Kays Creek (Kaysville) and built a log house. Margaret gave birth to twins, John and Charles, during a snowstorm. Charles worked as a stone cutter on the Salt Lake Temple and built many of the stone houses in Davis County. He had a blacksmith shop and orchards. He died April 10, 1891 in Centerville and Margaret died July 21, 1904 in Centerville. After coming to Utah they had John, Charles, Agnes, Archibald, Sarah Elizabeth and Christina.
